Fergus Johnston Composer
Fergus Johnston (b. 1959) is an established professional contemporary classical Irish Composer who creates unique musical works to be interpreted and performed by Irish and international orchestras, voices, ensembles and soloists around the world. In recognition of his unique talent and skills, Fergus Johnston was elected a member of Aosdána, Ireland’s organisation of outstanding artists. Membership of Aosdána, which is by peer nomination and election, is limited to 250 living artists, who have produced a distinguished body of work. Fergus Johnston was awarded a Ph.D. in Composition from Maynooth University and studied for an M.Phil. in Music & Media Technology from Trinity College Dublin. He was a recipient of both the New Music for Sligo Composition Prize, and the Arts Council of Ireland’s Macaulay Fellowship in 1989.
Fergus Johnston’s work encompasses solo, chamber, orchestral, and operatic genres, as well as acousmatic music. His music has been commissioned by many ensembles and organisations including The Irish Chamber Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the National Concert Hall Dublin, the Sonorities Festival Belfast, The Fidelio Trio, Rubato Dance, and Opera Theatre Company.
